A dermatologist is a medical physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases. The training to become a dermatologist is very specialized and strenuous. Dermatologists have completed many years of training to become experts in their field. The program includes four years of medical school, one-year of internship, and a minimum of three years in an accredited dermatology residency program. Additional study may be undertaken in specialized areas.
Dr. Westmoreland received his medical degree from the Univ. of Alabama School of Medicine. He then served in the United States Navy as an under sea medical officer, before completing a residency in Dermatology at UAB.

Board-certification means that a dermatologist has taken and passed rigorous examinations which cover all areas of dermatology including general practice, surgery, and pathology. Not all physicians in practice are board-certified in their respective specialties. The American Board of Dermatology is the main certifying body for dermatologists in the United States. Dr. Westmoreland and Dr. Sharp are board-certified dermatologists. Dr. Sharp is also a board-certified dermatopatholgist.
Once you have made your appointment with one of our dermatologists, you need to keep several things in mind as you prepare to see the doctor:
Know your family health history, especially relating to skin diseases such as skin cancer (basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma), eczema, psoriasis, and those pertinent to your concerns. Make sure you know what medications you are taking and bring a list if possible. Records of prior evaluations of your dermatologic condition including previous skin biopsies are always helpful in making your medical record complete.
If this is your first visit to Westmoreland Dermatology & Surgery Center, you can expedite your initial evaluation by downloading, printing, and completing the forms found in the Policies section of this website. By presenting these to our receptionist when you check in, you may be able to see the physicians sooner than if you wait to receive and complete them when you arrive.
